Top Developers Invited To Help Transform "Greater Manchester's Best Kept Secret”

The nation’s leading house builders and developers are being invited to join in a multi-million pound transformation of a former council estate in Tameside, Greater Manchester with the potential to be one of the most desirable addresses in the area.

National regeneration agency English Partnerships together with Tameside Council and Contour Housing Group are seeking a developer to work with them to deliver the comprehensive and sustainable regeneration of Hattersley.

The chosen developer will lead on creating new private housing, which will be required to meet English Partnerships’ urban design and quality standards, as well as a new shopping and community centre.

Set in stunning Peak District countryside less than 25 minutes from Manchester City Centre, Hattersley represents a rare opportunity for potential developers to make their mark in transforming the area. It already has excellent transport links, with a railway station and the M67 on its doorstep, and is credited as one of the safest and cleanest places to live in Greater Manchester.

Built in the 1960s as an ‘overspill’ estate to re-house people from East Manchester, the estate’s population has declined in recent years. However initial investment and innovative management by Contour Housing Group has already resulted in a substantial increase in demand to live in the area.

Now there is a major opportunity to turn around the area for 21st century living in a sustainable regeneration programme that involves:

  • upgrading existing social housing for local residents by Peak Valley Housing Association (a subsidiary of the Contour Housing Group)
  • encouraging people to move in from outside the area through new, high quality private housing
  • a new district centre anchored by a food store, shops, businesses and community services
  • open space improvements and new play facilities
  • new roads, public realm and landscaping

Paul Spooner, English Partnerships’ regional director for the North West and West Midlands said, ” This opportunity is exceptional - Hattersley has all the potential to be transformed into a highly desirable community. The introduction of high quality private housing is part of a programme of activity set to re-shape the area. Along with our partners, we are looking for developers and builders of the highest calibre to help deliver a community fit for the 21st century.”

Mike Creamer, Chief Executive of Contour Housing Group said,” This is a marvellous opportunity to transform Hattersley. Not only will existing residents’ houses be upgraded to a high standard, but the whole estate will be revived with new private housing and infrastructure to ensure that this community grows and remains vibrant for generations to come.”

Cllr Roy Oldham, Executive Leader of Tameside Council said, “The regeneration of Hattersley is a key priority for Tameside Council and we have been working hard with our partners to create the conditions for major private sector investment in the area.”
