Sustainable Development Review Launched

The government has announced that a review of Britain's energy policy will be carried out by energy minister Malcolm Wicks, with the goal of significantly reducing the UK's carbon dioxide emissions.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is also conducting a consultation on sustainable construction.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors has reported that the government is still falling behind on key sustainability goals, such as minimising energy use, reducing pollution and cutting waste.

The government consultation on future progress in the construction industry and sustainable construction was launched by minister for industry and the regions, Alun Michael.

The review will examine issues such as building design and the code for sustainable homes, improved embedded energy systems, waste minimisation, enhancement of biodiversity and efficiency in carbon emissions.

Announcing the review, Mr Michael said: "The purpose of the review is to create a framework within which the industry can continue to make a strong contribution to improving the quality of our lives and take account of the dynamics of the modern built environment."
