New Buildings Across the UK have been Shortlisted for Five RIBA Special Awards

Some of the most exciting new buildings across the UK have been shortlisted for five Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) Special Awards. The shortlists were drawn from the RIBA Award-winning buildings announced earlier this year in June. The RIBA Special Awards honour the best buildings with special emphasis on: sustainable or inclusive design; conservation; the role of a good client; and a project working within a smaller budget.

The shortlists follow:

Stephen Lawrence Prize
The Stephen Lawrence Prize is sponsored by the Goldschmied Foundation and rewards the best examples of projects with a construction budget of less than £1 million.

  2. Pinions Barn, Buckinghamshire by Simon Conder Associates
  3. The Davies Alpine House, Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, by Wilkinson Eyre Architects
  4. Lock-keeper's Graduate Centre, London E1 by Surface Architects
  5. Wrap House, London W4 by Alison Brooks Architects

Winner is announced on 14 October 2006

The Crown Estate Conservation Award
The Crown Estate Conservation Award is presented to the best work of conservation that demonstrates the successful restoration and/or adaptation of an architecturally significant building.

  1. Christ Church Spitalfields, London E1 by Purcell Miller Tritton in association with William Whitfield and Partners
  2. Pinions Barn, Buckinghamshire, by Simon Conder Associates
  3. Harbour Meadow, West Sussex by Avanti Architects
  4. The Egg, Bath by Haworth Tompkins
  5. National Gallery London East Wing + Central Portico Phase 1, London WC2 by Dixon Jones Ltd with Purcell Miller Tritton

RIBA Sustainability Award sponsored by English Partnerships
The RIBA Sustainability Award is given to the building that demonstrates most elegantly and durably the principles of sustainable architecture.

  2. National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff by Richard Rogers Partnership
  3. Heelis, The Central Office for The National Trust, Swindon by Feilden Clegg Bradley
  4. UCL - The School of Slavonic and East European Studies, London WC1 by Short and Associates

RIBA Inclusive Design Award in association with the Centre for Accessible Environments and Nicholls & Clarke
The RIBA Inclusive Design Award celebrates inclusivity in building design, and demonstrates that good design results in environments that are safe, convenient and enjoyable to use by people regardless of disability, age or gender.

RIBA Arts Council England Client of the Year
RIBA Arts Council England Client of the Year award honours the key role that a good client plays in the creation of fine architecture.

  1. Queen Mary University of London for the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science -The Blizard Building by Alsop Design Ltd + Amec Design + Management and the Lock-keeper’s Graduate Centre by Surface Architects
  2. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew for their programme of masterplanning and new building including The Davies Alpine House by Wilkinson Eyre Architects
  3. Maggie’s Centres for commissioning a series of high quality buildings including the Maggie’s Highland Cancer Caring Centre, Inverness by Page/Park Architects
  4. National Gallery for their programme of works including the recently completed East Wing and Central Portico Phase I by Dixon Jones Ltd with Purcell Miller Tritton

Winner is announced on 28 September 2006

The shortlist for one other RIBA Special Award, the Manser Medal sponsored by RobinEllis for the best one-off house or major extension, will be announced on Thursday 21 September. The winner of the Manser Medal and the Stephen Lawrence Prize will be announced on Saturday 14 October at the Roundhouse, London, prior to the live announcement of The RIBA Stirling Prize in association with The Architects’ Journal on Channel 4 between 8 - 9pm. The other four RIBA Special Award winners will be announced on Thursday 28 September.
