Turning big cities green

Big cities like Chicago and New York City generate problems due to their inherent vast expanses of concrete and asphalt. Aside from the aesthetic and health effects of a lack of green space, the cities become ‘heat islands’. In order to try and alleviate these problems the cities are getting serious about turning the building rooftops from a barren landscape into a living network of meadows and gardens.

New York’s Earth Pledge Green Roofs Initiative has recently launched Greening Gotham.org, an online green roof resource including urban environmental news, case studies and a “how to” guide to planning and implementing a green roof project.
