Sustainable Regeneration of Limerick City

BRE Ireland - a partnership between the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology - has won the tender for ‘Client Advisor in Sustainability' for the regeneration of the North and South sides of Limerick.

‘The regeneration in Moyross, Southill and Ballinacurra Weston is not just about building houses but it is about creating communities that the residents will be proud of. The new town and neighbourhoods must be sustainable into the future from a social, economical, environmental and physical perspective. The involvement of BRE Ireland in the projects will help to achieve these objectives. They will also be in a position to advise the Agencies on best practice due to the experience that they have gained in regeneration in other areas.' Speaking from his office in the Enterprise Acceleration Centre in Moylish Park, Limerick, BRE Ireland's Director Dr. Colm Cryan said ‘We are absolutely delighted!'

‘BRE Ireland brings a wealth of knowledge in the field of sustainability, accumulated through decades of research and implementation.  We set up the company with a vision to set the standard for sustainability, innovation and enterprise in the Irish construction industry and this win in the Limerick Regeneration Project is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities.'

The Agencies want to make sure that sustainability is included from the beginning, not bolted on as an afterthought.  To this end BRE Ireland will:

  • Work with the North and South Side Regeneration Agencies to determine what sustainability issues need to be addressed in the master plans
  • Develop sustainability objectives for the projects
  • Provide a means to co-ordinate and monitor progress towards the objectives
  • Provide supporting advice to the master planning teams through the Agencies to meet the agreed objectives
  • Deliver practical solutions to sustainable issues such as, energy and water consumption, transport, security provisions and waste management.

Cate Lamb, an environmental scientist, who recently relocated to Limerick, has been appointed by BRE Ireland to head up their effort.

‘It is wonderful to see the Agency taking such a forward thinking, holistic view of the regeneration and its impact on people, places and profit,' explains Cate. ‘This practical view along with BRE Ireland's involvement will help ensure that the concerns, aspirations and ambitions of the local residents are addressed. It is very exciting to be involved in such a fulfilling and worthy project.‘

Cate will be providing expert and impartial advice to the Agencies who will then be directing the master-planners to ensure that best practices in sustainability are applied.
