McDonald's first for new construction NVQ

Three McDonald’s Employees are the first in the country to complete a brand new NVQ Level 5 qualification in Construction Project Management, the highest in the NVQ framework. Peter Wall, Gareth Jones and Richard England, all Construction and Project Managers for McDonald's were awarded their qualifications by Sir Michael Latham at a reception this week at the striking new look McDonald's Restaurant in London’s Oxford Street.

Combined they have over 46 years experience working for McDonald’s managing hundreds of projects, including 300 new Restaurant openings and countless refurbishments for the company. Through gaining these NVQ qualifications each recipient has become a member of the CIOB (MCIOB).

The qualification is the first of its kind in the UK and is designed for construction personnel who engage in Construction Project Management. Managers are required to provide satisfactory evidence of their management skills, technical knowledge, and competence in managing construction projects, measured against an industry-agreed set of standards. The award was obtained through the CASL Management Training NVQ centre with the Joint Awarding Body of Edexcel, CIOB and the Institution of Civil Engineers. CASL Management Training is the first centre to be approved to offer this qualification.

Peter Wall, Regional Construction Manager Said, "It has been a tough time but worth the hard work. This means a lot to each of us, not only from a professional point of view, but because it signals a positive development for the industry. It gives others the chance to work towards this qualification taking industry training to a new level".

Sir Michael Latham commented, "High level vocational qualifications like this new NVQ need to be promoted throughout the industry. The level of excellence attained by these McDonald's employees is essential in constructions' continued pursuit of best practice and quality through training. The fact they now qualify for CIOB membership shows their dedication to the industry."

Chris Blythe CIOB Chief Executive added, "We are delighted that McDonald's is the first to benefit from this new qualification, and congratulations to Peter, Gareth and Richard on their accomplishment. McDonald's has a long history of extensive construction projects, and now with a striking new refurbishment programme in process, it demonstrates that McDonald's continue to innovate and operate professionally.

He continued: "This is a good opportunity for us to promote high-level vocational qualifications in our industry and encourage other construction managers seeking career development opportunities to work more closely with us. The CIOB is a leading professional body for managers in construction and for almost 170 years has lead the way in establishing, promoting and maintaining standards of excellence in the Construction Industry."

Peter Richards, McDonalds Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer said, "This is great news for McDonald's, and further illustrates our aim to encourage learning and personal skills development at every level. At McDonald's we value our employees highly and it is a real credit to Peter, Gareth and Richard that they are the first in the country to achieve this recognition."
