First Green Building Complete Utilizing New Construction Technology

New construction technology helps earn Fresh & Easy grocery store LEED™ Gold Certification and considerable cost savings

r3 Building Systems has completed its first building utilizing a new construction technology specifically designed to provide a green building solution that is less expensive and quicker to build versus traditional construction.

The one of a kind, patent pending technology was exclusively utilized to design and construct the new LEEDTM Gold Certified Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market in Cathedral City, California, which held its grand opening on September 24, 2009.

The 13,659- square foot store was constructed using r3 Building Systems’ custom building system which consists of a patent pending structural frame and wall panels. Due to r3’s unique custom building system, the new store consists of 84 percent recycled content and garnered a 10 percent savings in construction/consulting costs. On an ongoing basis the store will net a 42 percent savings in energy cost netting an anticipated savings of $75,000. The store will also see a 59 percent reduction in water use.

This is r3 Building Systems’ first completed project and the first LEED™ Gold certified building in Cathedral City and for Fresh and Easy. By utilizing r3 Building Systems expertise and innovation with building materials, the project was able to obtain an additional 15 points, which propelled Fresh and Easy into the LEED™ Gold certification. r3 is currently working on their second Fresh and Easy store utilizing the same technology and consulting services in Oceanside, CA.

“We are proud to say our product is truly unique. There is nothing else like it out on the market in terms of design process, capabilities and cost savings,” said David Bergman, executive director with r3 Building Systems.

The r3 system was developed to overcome many challenges, including high cost and extended time factors, associated with traditional green building technology. The benefits of utilizing r3 Building Systems include operational savings (as demonstrated with the new Fresh and Easy store), increased property value, ease of assembly, and sustainable materials, as well as green design and construction.

The unique design is also a solution to the inherent problems of building occupancy separation and load capabilities. The all steel components provide the system with a high fire resistance rating which will result in lower insurance costs.

“We believe our system to be the green building solution for multiple industries including hotels, retail, education, corporate office buildings, grocery supermarkets, automotive and restaurants,” states Bergman.

r3 Building Systems, founded in 2008, is a division of The Bergman Companies, a leader in architecture, construction and development for over 30 years. The Bergman Companies has completed over 10,000 projects and is licensed in 49 states.

Leveraging off The Bergman Companies’ extensive construction knowledge, r3 Building Systems is well positioned to be the premier sustainable team on a plethora of project sizes and types both nationally and internationally.
