Planners Urged To Create Better Towns

Vibrant, thriving town centres should be at the heart of sustainable communities. That's the conclusion of a new 'planning policy statement' published by the Government today.

Citing Manchester and Walsall as good examples of what can be done, Minister Keith Hill said that planning bodies must be more proactive in planning the development of their towns.

They should ensure city centres are the 'focus for development, to provide a range of services in a good environment, accessible to all.' He blamed out-of-town developments of the past for social and economic decay in some areas.

Keith Hill said: "The creation of thriving town centres that provide local people with retail, leisure and other facilities they need is of critical importance to our vision of sustainable communities. "Well-planned towns will attract visitors and investors and can help combat social exclusion. " He said that local authorities should promote 'high quality and inclusive design' and make efficient use of land, while encouraging a cleaner, safer and greener environment.
