BNY Mellon Everett Facility Achieves LEED EB Gold Status

BNY Mellon (NYSE: BK), the global leader in asset management and securities servicing, today announced that its facility in Everett, Mass. has been awarded a Gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in the existing building (EB) category.

LEED is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance, environmentally-sustainable, or "green" buildings. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas: sustainable sites, water savings, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality. To earn this certification, the building's operations, maintenance practices and procedures were also reviewed by a third-party to ensure energy efficiency and sustainability based on the USGBC's high performance green building standards.

"This award is the culmination of a comprehensive environmental sustainability program that has involved all of our Everett-based employees," said Jim Palermo, co-CEO of BNY Mellon Asset Servicing. "The achievement gives us all a tremendous sense of pride."

"We gladly accepted the challenges of retrofitting this building," said Thaddeus "Chip" Logan, Director of Corporate Facilities Services and Sustainability, BNY Mellon. "Sustainability is a key pillar of BNY Mellon's corporate social responsibility program and a strategic business priority that also happens to be the right thing for our company and its employees, clients and communities."

BNY Mellon Everett achieved its LEED EB Gold certification for superior energy, lighting, water and material use, along with a variety of sustainable building strategies. Specific highlights include:

  • Decreasing energy consumption by nearly 20 percent through building-wide control systems, operating methods, and lighting automation;
  • Renewable energy power generation from a rooftop solar array;
  • Exemplary recycling, waste management and employee education programs;
  • A superior water management program delivering a 34 percent reduction in usage from efficient fixtures and landscaping;
  • A green cleaning policy with environmentally-sensitive products and processes; and
  • BNY Mellon's sustainable purchasing program.

Working with National Grid and leveraging a grant from the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust, plus state and federal tax incentives, BNY Mellon installed a 76-kiloWatt-hour rooftop solar array on the Everett location in early 2009. The system is designed to annually reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 50 tons and it will pay for itself in less than five years, while also relieving peak energy demand on the Everett grid.

Opened in 1999 after extensive renovations to a former Textron manufacturing plant, BNY Mellon's 385,000 sq. ft. office complex in Everett is home to more than 1,000 employees and an operations center for the company's asset servicing and other businesses.  In addition to its LEED EB Gold recognition, BNY Mellon Everett has attained the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR award for eight consecutive years. The company worked closely with property manager Jones Lang LaSalle to achieve these awards.

BNY Mellon's comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability is based on a balanced, global strategy that includes energy-efficiency goals for its owned and controlled properties along with leading investments in renewable energy sources, and green policies, programs and practices. Due to its careful stewardship of finite resources, BNY Mellon is a green leader.
