PPG Industries Ships 120 Million Square Feet of SOLARBAN Glass

PPG Industries has announced that it has shipped 120 million-square-foot of SOLARBAN 70XL glass, which is the first low-emissivity, solar control and silver-coated glass in the industry.

The RBC Centre, Toronto, features floor-to-ceiling windows made with SOLARBAN(R) 70XL glass by PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG). The ability of SOLARBAN 70XL glass to block heat while transmitting high levels of light helped the 41-story tower become the first LEED(R) certified office building in Canada. The company has already installed this glass in more than 1,000 buildings across North America. Out of these, around 160 have been documented for LEED certification from the US Green Building Council. Solarban 70XL was first introduced in the year 2005 which had solar control performance and which had a clear glass appearance. The glass has a light-to-solar gain ratio of 2.37 where the solar heat gain coefficient is 0.27 and the visible light transmittance is 64%.

Many building where Solarban 70XL is installed have received the building of the year award from the American Institute of Architects Committee. Skyscrapers that have installed the glass include RBC Center in Toronto, Three PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, City Center Plaza in Bellevue, Washington and One Bank of America Tower in Charlotte N.C.

According to Glenn Miner who is the Director of PPG for the department of flat glass, construction providing architects and planners with the right kind of glass is important so that they are able to implement their designs in a better manner. More and more architects prefer Solarban 70XL since it has high solar control performance and maintains consistency in terms of aesthetics.
