Phase One Hybrid Bill Deposited before Parliament for High Speed Rail Program

The High Speed 2 project took a major step forward this week with the deposit of the Phase One hybrid Bill before Parliament on Monday, 25 November 2013. During a period of great debate on UK infrastructure, this news comes as a significant boost for British engineering.

The Bill lays out the plans for the first phase of the high speed rail link between London and the West Midlands and provides the Government with the relevant powers to construct and operate the railway.

CH2M HILL, as Phase One Development Partner, has managed the engineering, design, environmental and land referencing aspects of the project since early 2012 and has played an important role in the writing and subsequent deposit of the hybrid Bill. Roy Hill, HS2 Phase One Project Director said, “Developing the Phase One Bill in record time was only achieved by the HS2 ‘One Team’ approach, which was embraced by all involved.”

Mark Fallon, European Managing Director at CH2M HILL, said: “The deposit of this Bill before Parliament marks a significant step forward for the High Speed Rail program and is a major achievement for such an important UK infrastructure project. The close collaboration between industry and Government departments to present this Bill on time is a testament to public and private organisations working together is key in delivering programs like this.”

“CH2M HILL is proud to have been involved with this, not only is it a huge success for British engineering but projects like HS2 also inspire more young people to pursue careers in engineering. The opportunities for job creation and the wider economic benefits this brings to the UK is vast. Back in April this year we announced the creation of 500 new jobs in the UK – it is projects like this which allows companies like CH2M HILL to provide the next generation with the chance to develop their skills in this field and for Britain to become a world leader in this industry.”
