ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas has exceeded the United States Department of Energy's Better Plants® program requirements seven years early and 13 percent above targeted program goals. The company was recognized at the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) at the Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. on October 2, 2014.
In 2011, ThyssenKrupp Elevator joined the Department of Energy's Better Plants program (previously called Save Energy Now) and agreed to reduce energy consumption by 25 percent in 10 years.
"We joined the Better Plants program to further our commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Focusing on energy reduction and reducing waste represent significant goals for ThyssenKrupp Elevator's U.S. operations. In 2009, prior to joining the Better Plants program, we pledged to reduce energy and water use by 20 percent by 2015. It is truly a testament to our convictions that we have exceeded both the timeline and the percentage of reduction so aggressively," says Doug Apelt, president of manufacturing, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas.
Other sustainability-focused activities at ThyssenKrupp Elevator in recent news include:
- Fraunhofer Living Laboratory - conducting feasibility on 100% solar powered elevator at the laboratory;
- Green Fleet - recently added both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and hybrid to our existing propane and electric alternative vehicle options;
- Received a VDI A Rating for our TAC 32 elevator controller - VDI measures and classifies elevators according to their energy performance;
- Only elevator company with a Health Product Declaration (HPD) and representation on the Manufacturers Advisory Panel through the HPD Collaborative; and,
- Recently awarded a contract to install an endura MRL elevator on a Living Building Challenge (strictest green building system in the world).
Apelt was in Washington D.C. on October 2, 2014 to accept the award at the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) from Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency, Dr. Kathleen Hogan.
