Canam-Bridges, a division of Canam Group Inc., signed a letter of commitment with SNC-Lavalin Major Projects Inc., Dragados Canada, Inc. and Flatiron Constructors Canada Limited to supply and fabricate the steel superstructure in the scope of the construction of the new Champlain Bridge between Montreal and the South Shore.
These companies form part of the Signature on the St. Lawrence Group consortium that was selected as the preferred proponent by the Government of Canada to finance, design, build, operate and maintain the new bridge, which will have an approximate length of 2.1 miles (3.4 km) and is slated to open in 2018.
The new bridge will span the St. Lawrence River from the île des Sœurs to Brossard, immediately downstream from the existing Champlain Bridge. The new bridge is expected to feature a three-corridor design, including two three-lane corridors for vehicular traffic and a two-lane public transport corridor capable of accommodating a light rail transit system. The new bridge will also include a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
Discussions with the builder will continue over the coming weeks with a view to signing one of the largest contracts ever obtained by Canam Group. This contract remains subject to the signature of various contractual agreements between the consortium and the federal government.
Canam Group operates 22 plants throughout North America, four of which are specialized in the fabrication of bridge components: the Quebec City and Laval plants in Quebec, the Claremont plant in New Hampshire and the Point of Rocks plant in Maryland. The Quebec City plant is the largest bridge fabrication facility in Canada.
