ThyssenKrupp Architectural Competition Moves into Second Phase

The architectural competition for the ThyssenKrupp Quarter, launched in May by ThyssenKrupp as a two-phase open international competition, is now entering the second phase.

The first phase centered on developing the urban design structure.

In the second phase, contestants will be required to present an impressive design which incorporates ThyssenKrupp's corporate identity and sets new standards of corporate architecture.

Following the first phase, which attracted entries from over 100 architecture firms, the panel of judges met for two days to decide on the eleven firms which will go forward to the second phase. This phase will be a cooperative process with dialogue between the panel of judges and the participants to allow new findings from the ongoing planning process to be incorporated.

The following firms will take part in the second competition phase:

  • J.S.K. - Siat International GmbH, Frankfurt/Main
  • Atelier D'Architecture Chaix & Morel Et Associes, Paris, in association with JSWD Architekten + Planer, Cologne
  • Prof. Helge Bofinger & Partner Dipl. Ing. Architiekt BDA, Wiesbaden
  • HPP Hentrich - Petschnigg & Partner KG, Düsseldorf
  • Fürst Architects GmbH, Düsseldorf
  • Architekten Brüning Klapp Rein, Essen
  • Zaha Hadid Architects, Ltd., London
  • Manfred Nagel Architekt BDA Stadtplaner, Kiel
  • KSP Engel und Zimmermann Architekten, Frankfurt am Main
  • h4a Gessert + Randecker Architekten BDA in AG mit Prof. Klaus Legner, Stuttgart
  • Schmiedeknecht Architekten, Berlin
  • Firms from Spain, South America, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, USA and Switzerland also participated.

This unusual and ambitious project is subject to a tight schedule: the first construction phase is to be completed by the end of 2008, and the second phase by fall 2010.

The panel of judges will meet at the end of November 2006 to decide on the winning entry.
