Durapipe SuperFLO has been specified as part of the £61.5 million refurbishment of John Lewis’ flagship store on Oxford Street, London.
John Lewis Partnership specified SuperFLO pipework in sizes ranging from 110mm to 315mm for the store’s chilled water system, due to its lightweight properties and simple jointing technique.
Installed in the plant room and on the roof of the store, it was important that the pipework could be easily transported throughout the building. SuperFLO offered excellent benefits to Southern Pipework Services, who installed the pipework. Its lightweight properties made it easy to handle on site and the product’s solvent welding technique also reduced labour time and cost throughout the installation process.
Health and safety is a major issue on all large-scale construction projects, and was a big consideration for Southern Pipework Services. Due to SuperFLO’s jointing technique, no hot works is required, which greatly reduces health and safety risks and so this was an influencing factor in the decision to specify the system.
Commenting on the installation, John Richardson from Southern Pipework Services said: “We have used Durapipe UK products on several previous projects and have always been impressed with the products’ capabilities and the service received from the Durapipe UK team.
“The lightweight properties of the system meant it was easier for us to transport the pipework onto the roof and the solvent welding technique makes the jointing process extremely quick and easy. It takes half the time of alternative pipework systems.”
The major refurbishment will see a complete overhaul of the store including a transformation of the interior shopping space and new eating facilities, as well as structural improvements to the building. The new-look store is due for completion in October 2007.
