World’s tallest building opened

It’s 508m high, 56m higher than Malaysia's Petronas Towers, and it has just been opened. The Taipei 101 building is located in Singapore and is now the world’s tallest building.

Named after it’s 101 floors, the building has a five-storey shopping mall with a huge food court, medium-to-high-end boutiques and a department store. At present this area is all that is open of the building. The office space from floors 9 to 84, and the higher observation decks, will open in around a years time.

The first 62 floors are built from giant steel columns filled with high-strength concrete. Above that the floors are much lighter, constructed mostly of steel and glass. Taipei 101 is designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 7, a 1 in 100 year typhoon and a 1 in 200 year flood.
