Jennic Introduces Intelligent Lighting Reference Design to Develop Next Generation Lighting Systems

Jennic, a manufacturer of innovative 32-bit wireless microcontrollers announces the release of an Intelligent Lighting Reference Design to enable intelligent wireless control and monitoring for evaluation and development of next generation lighting systems. Based upon a comprehensive and field proven solution, it allows lighting system manufacturers to rapidly design in wireless technology, with confidence that the finished solution provides the required robustness for today’s environments.

The reference design is provided as two packages; one enabling initial evaluation, and a second enabling development. The evaluation package provides everything needed to explore the extensive features of Jennic’s JenNet wireless networking solution for lighting control, using Jennic's standard off-the-shelf evaluation kit. It enables features such as lamp failure detection and reporting, monitoring of power usage and lamp condition, remote power switching and dimming of lamps to be explored. It includes binary files for a simulated Street Light and Gateway, a PC based Graphical User Interface (GUI) for network control and monitoring, a Gateway command set and extensive user documentation explaining full system operation. The developer package adds complete application source code and design reference manual to allow for customisation.

Jimi Simpson, Jennic Product Marketing, commented, “Environmental concerns and the rising cost of energy, make efficiency a key concern. One of the biggest contributors to energy usage is in the lighting of streets, offices, schools, car parks and public buildings. The Intelligent Lighting Reference Design enables lighting solutions providers and manufacturers to rapidly employ wireless technology that will give them the edge when it comes to system efficiency. Our solution provides an efficient way to decrease energy usage, reduce CO2 emissions and to cut energy costs.”

At the heart of the design is Jennic’s IEEE802.15.4 standards based wireless microcontroller technology operating in the unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM band, providing a solution for a global market. To enable rapid time to market, Jennic offer a range of pre-certified surface mounted wireless modules that provide the easiest method to integrate wireless connectivity with the lamp electronics. The modules have full compliance with all RF regulatory requirements meaning lower certification costs, and once integrated all that is needed is firmware download and the system is ready to go.
