NCC Wins SEK 230 Million Contract to Build Soccer Arena in Kalmar

NCC Construction Sweden has been commissioned to construct a state-of-the art soccer and events arena in Kalmar, with a capacity for 11,800 spectators. The client is the Kalmar FF soccer club and the order is worth more than SEK 230 million.

Just outside Kalmar, in the Hansa City retail center, NCC is to construct the new arena on behalf of Kalmar FF, a soccer team in Sweden’s premier league. The arena will provide seats for 11,800 spectators, all under cover.

Since, in addition to soccer, the arena will be used for various types of events, it will be modified to be able to withstand the extra strain caused by, for example, major concerts.

Among other considerations, construction of the arena will require a certain amount of piling. “A layer of clay at a depth of up to eight meters will require that the foundations of the arena be reinforced by means of piling and lime stabilization,” says Jonas Kristiansson, Business Manager at NCC in Kalmar. The soccer pitch will have a natural grass surface, which will require sowing as early as spring 2010 in order to be playable in time for the spring 2011.

The project will commence immediately and the arena will have to be ready for springtime 2011. Construction will employ an average of about 40 skilled workers.

The order will be registered in the fourth quarter of 2009.
