Stion Completes Installation of 172kW Rooftop Solar Array at San Francisco International Airport

Stion Energy Services, the project development arm of Stion, has completed the installation and commissioning of a 172 kilowatt commercial rooftop solar array at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The solar array is expected to generate 281,128 kWh of energy annually and enable LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification for SFO’s new West Field Cargo Building.

Stion Energy Services provided a turn-key solar solution for Hensel Phelps Construction at the 78,000 sq.ft. West Field Cargo Building, which is the newest commercial building at SFO. Stion’s turn-key solar solution was selected by Hensel Phelps for the project through a competitive bid process, in which Stion Energy Services was able to demonstrate the overall best value for the project through a combination of offering the highest level of energy production at the most competitive cost.

“We enjoyed working with the Stion Energy Services team. They performed their scope of work in a timely and efficient manner. The overall solar array also looks fantastic and will be a nice visual complement for the West Field Cargo Building,” commented Scott Bills, Project Manager for Hensel Phelps at the San Francisco Airport.

The West Field Cargo Building did not have a roof facing 180° due south, but Stion’s “Simply Better” CIGS technology generates ample electricity even when the sun’s rays do not hit the panel at an ideal perpendicular angle, which was one of the reasons Stion’s solar system solution was selected for the project. Stion also utilized a Sollega ballasted roof mount in conjunction with Advanced Energy string inverters.

“We expect SFO to see an attractive return on investment over the lifetime of the solar project,” stated Jeffery Cheng, CEO of the Stion Energy Services. “Whereas traditional silicon panels generally incur higher degradation levels that quickly reduce power output, the lower degradation factor of the Stion solution will keep production levels more constant over the lifetime of the system.”
