ABB Releases Spot-Welding Robot

ABB Limited has released a spot-welding robot offering a choice of mounting options, including upside down. Capable of being inverted, floor mounted, tilted or shelf-mounted as part of a high robot density two layer automotive installations, the IRB6620 is ideal for use in confined areas and as part of manufacturing cells alongside other robots.
Key to the IRB6620’s flexibility is the removal of the balancing cylinder, which makes the robot more compact and agile. Weighing in at just 900 kilos, the IRB6620 offers simplified installation, with no need for heavy-lifting cranes.

“Our target was to develop the most versatile robot on the market,” says Nigel Platt, Sales and Marketing Manager for ABB Robotics. “The IRB 6620 is compact and agile, and optimised for spot welding and handling applications. It has been developed together with our major automotive customers and includes a lot of features requested by them, such as compactness and agility. We have also applied the features common to all our robots, such as high performance, reliability, collision resistance and low maintenance costs.”

As the IRB 6620 can be inverted, it can also be used for other applications such as sand core handling and cutting. In addition, it is suitable for installations where robots need to be mounted on top of a machine, such as assembly and materials handling and machine-tending applications.

“We expect this robot to be a high volume product not just in the automotive industry but also be a valuable player in other industries such as foundry, plastics and machine shops”, adds Platt.
