Turner Construction Wins Transbay Transit Center Project in California

Turner Construction Company, the nation's leading general builder, is providing construction management services for the Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, Calif., designed to be the "Grand Central Station of the West."

The project is estimated to create more than 48,000 jobs in its first phase of construction. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2017.

Replacing a terminal constructed in 1939, the 1.3 million square foot regional transportation hub is designed to serve more than 45 million passengers a year and connect eight counties and 11 transit systems, including the future California High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles / Anaheim.  There will be no interruption in service while the Transbay Transit Center is being constructed.

This five-story transit center will serve Caltrain and serve as the northern terminus for the future California High Speed Rail. The scope of work will include construction of bus ramps to connect the Transit Center to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, as well as to an off-site bus storage facility.

The groundbreaking for the Transbay Transit Center took place in a ceremony with Senator Barbara Boxer, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and other dignitaries as well as representatives from the building team in attendance.

"We are proud to serve as the construction manager of this high-speed rail project that will benefit travelers across the state and throughout the region," said Michael O'Brien, Senior Vice President of Turner's Northern California operations.

The $4.2 billion Transbay Transit Center project has come to realization through various funding partners that include $400 million in stimulus funds from the Federal Government with, the State of California, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the San Francisco County and San Mateo County Transportation Authorities and AC Transit, among others.

Turner will provide construction management oversight services, including field oversight, cost management, schedule management, technical support, environmental monitoring, coordination with all stakeholders, progress reporting and testing and inspection quality assurance services.

Turner is constructing additional transportation facilities in California that include the San Francisco International Airport Terminal 2/ Boarding Area D Renovation, the Oakland International Airport Terminal 1 renovation, the Sacramento International Airport Terminal Modernization Program and the San Diego Airport Terminal 2 and Airside Expansion.  The Oakland International Airport Terminal 2 Expansion Project was recently awarded LEED Silver certification, the first airport in the United States to achieve this level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
