Acuity Brands to Provide Holophane Lighting for Tampa Bay Highway Project

Acuity Brands (NYSE: AYI), a market leader in innovative energy efficient lighting and control solutions, is pleased to announce a major project to provide Holophane® brand outdoor roadway lighting for a large highway design build project to connect Florida’s Interstate 4 in Tampa Bay to the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway.

The Holophane brand has been a recognized leader in high-quality and lowest total cost of ownership lighting solutions for commercial, industrial, emergency and outdoor applications for more than 110 years.

Attracting businesses and tourists alike, the Tampa Bay area has been growing in population, commerce and transportation activity at a very rapid rate for many years. This growth has created an intense demand for maintenance and expansion of Tampa Bay roads, highways and other infrastructure assets. For this reason, a new connector roadway was approved to provide improved access between I-4 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. This interchange will provide more convenient, efficient freeway-to-freeway access to downtown Tampa and the Port of Tampa.

One of the goals for this new connector roadway is to maintain a high level of aesthetic appeal, including enhancements complementing the architectural features of the 7th Avenue overpass in the Ybor City historic district. Helping to create a clean aesthetic appearance for the project is a contemporary styled lighting fixture, the Mongoose®, part of the Acuity Brands’ Holophane line. The Mongoose fixture, which provides highly efficient roadway illumination, was selected for its contemporary styling, high performance and easy maintenance characteristics.

The order for Holophane Mongoose luminaires for the expressway connector was recently secured from Torres Electrical Supply of Stuart, Florida on behalf of Gerelco Electrical Contractors located in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. “As a leader in providing highway lighting, signalization, wiring and electrical supplies, we are very excited and proud to be participating in this project,” Oscar L. Torres of Torres Electrical Supply said.

Gerelco has been selected by the general contracting team to complete the electrical work on the I-4/Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway Connector. The first bridge beams were set in October 2010 and the project is scheduled to be completed in the middle of 2012.

“The Holophane Mongoose roadway and area lighting luminaire is a fixture with unsurpassed optical versatility for commercial developments, residential streets, parkways, parking lots, airports, institutional sites, municipalities and power plants,” said Jack Ries, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President and General Manager, Holophane. “The luminaire is ideally suited for outdoor applications, with features including a die cast aluminum housing that is pre-treated and powder-coated with a corrosion resistant finish to meet the most rugged industry standards, and 14 advanced optical systems that provide the best combination of horizontal and vertical illumination,” Ries said.

Pole spacing of up to 10 times the mounting height is possible with Mongoose luminaires. Improved light distribution further reduces the number of required poles, which results in less energy consumption as well as lower initial installation and life-cycle costs.
