APWA Presents Merit Award to Downtown Indio Revitalization Project

The Downtown Indio Revitalization, Phase I Infrastructure Improvement Project was recently awarded a Project of Merit Award by the Coachella Valley Branch of the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) in the Street and Transportation – Urban Renewal Category.

The APWA honored the Project of Merit winners, at a luncheon held at the Mission Hills Country Club, in Rancho Mirage, on November 1, 2010. A donation was made to the Inland Empire Chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB) to commemorate the winners engineering achievements.

RBF Consulting (RBF) partnered with the City of Indio Redevelopment Agency (RDA) to provide full service engineering, planning, landscaping, and construction management for their reconstruction effort within the City’s downtown. This award-winning project included sewer and water line relocations, street reconstruction, traffic signal modification, street lighting, landscaping, landscape lighting, hardscape improvements, street furniture, alley way conversion to pedestrian and landscape corridor, and dry utility relocations. Additionally, two public parking lots, providing 53 off street parking stalls, were constructed in compliance with the RDA Downtown Development land use plan.

RBF worked closely with the City of Indio RDA, local business owners, and utility companies to gain consensus and community buy-in for the civil and streetscape improvements. Extensive coordination with the utility companies, Imperial Irrigation District, Valley Sanitary District and Indio Water Authority were necessary for the extensive relocation of water, sewer and utility lines. The new infrastructure completed in Phase I of this project was designed, and built, to sustain not only the existing commerce along Miles Avenue and Towne Street, but also to support the RDA’s vision for new businesses, high density housing developments and the overall revitalization of Downtown Indio.
