Lowe’s to Sell GE Energy Smart LED Bulb

Lowe’s announced today it is the first national retailer to offer consumers the industry’s first and only ENERGY STAR® rated LED A-Line bulb. Consumers will find the GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED bulb on Lowes.com today – just in time to satisfy every technology enthusiast’s holiday wish list.

The GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED light bulb is rated to last more than 22 years, surviving perennial gifts such as sweaters or flannel shirts by at least a decade. Priced at $34.98 this LED light bulb makes a lasting, affordable gift that will be sure to brighten every season.

“The addition of the first ENERGY STAR rated LED bulb to our lighting line exemplifies Lowe’s commitment to providing our customers energy-efficient choices for their homes,” said Karena Bailey, Lowe’s merchandising vice president. “Lowe’s offers more in-stock ENERGY STAR lighting than any other home improvement retailer, and this innovation in LED technology provides exceptional value for our consumers, helping them save money and energy over the bulbs’ lifetimes.”

The 9-watt GE Energy Smart® LED bulb with a unique omni-directional light output meant to replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb in desk, bedside or hallway lamps earned the ENERGY STAR rating in early December. The new LED bulb provides:

  • a soft white light (3,000K) and 80 color-rendering index;
  • instant full brightness like incandescent and halogen bulbs;
  • a 77-percent energy savings compared with a 40-watt incandescent bulb; and
  • a rated life of over 22 years when operated 3 hours per day.

The GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED light bulb will be available to consumers in all Lowe’s stores nationwide by February 2011.

Lowe’s also offers consumers new LED ceiling fan options, helping them save money and energy over the lifetime of the products. The Hunter 52" Infiniti Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan, featuring a 13 watt LED light kit, offers a 10 year warranty on the light kit and boasts a savings of $25 a year based on average use of 6 hours per day, 365 days per year when compared to a ceiling fan with two, standard 60 watt incandescent light bulbs when used under the same conditions.

The Harbor Breeze 52" Eco Breeze Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan with an LED light kit, will last up to 22 years and cost as little as $6 a year to operate when used three hours per day, 365 days per year. This results in a savings of $220 over the lifespan of the product when compared to a ceiling fan with two, 60 watt incandescent light bulbs costing $16 a year when used under the same conditions (based on a cost of $0.10/KwH).

As an ENERGY STAR partner, Lowe's helps consumers save money and protect the environment by offering a wide variety of ENERGY STAR qualified products. Lowe’s commitment to energy efficiency has been recognized every year since 2002 with an ENERGY STAR award. In 2010, Lowe's became the first product retailing partner to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) highest honor: the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award.
