IESO Receives LEED Silver Certification for its System Control Center

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) declared that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has granted LEED Silver certification for its System Control Center accrediting it’s environmentally- friendly performance.

IESO has successfully implemented a number of energy saving eco-friendly programs to cut down water and energy usage within the building. The building received LEED certification under the existing building category.

The three-storey construction located in Mississauga, covering an area of around 148,000 square feet was originally built in 1990 and went through a 30,000-square-foot improvement in the construction in 2002. The company has implemented a policy to purchase green products, introduced a total waste management system that saved most of the items from reaching landfills and introduced a regular recycling process to achieve LEED silver certification. The building also installed water conserving fixtures during the last two years to save nearly 34% of its water. It also installed a sub-metering to monitor the power consumption details of its cooling tower and building and erected a weather station to manage water irrigation to its lawns.

The IESO manages bulk electricity system of Ontario and controls the wholesale electricity market.
