Western Illinois University Completes Installation of Matrix Synthetic Turf Field

Western Illinois University (WIU) declared that it has completed the installation of Matrix synthetic turf field at its campus by Hellas Sports Construction.

The completion of the installation enables WIU to join the elite group comprising North Arizona University, the Alamodome, Idaho State, Baylor University, the Cotton Bowl and the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The installation will enable WIU to remain ready for its home season opener versus Jacksonville University.

The Matrix system considered as the foremost in the turf industry is made up of unique monofilament (spinneret) yarns in various sizes, colors and shapes. The configuration of the turf system enables the best possible grip and structural stability possible and the combination of colors offers good light deflection under the stadium lighting arrangement. The eco-friendly support and robust external coating enables unique adherence to the turf. The turf product provides increased level of sturdiness and playability when compared to the other turf products available in the market.

The Hanson Field where the new turf was installed needed removal of the previously laid grass surface and required major construction to develop the required type of ground to install the new Matrix system. During the process, the discus and shot put areas were relocated and four new pits for triple jump and long jump and a runway for javelin were installed afterwards.

The turf installation is an initiative of the Western Forward Facility launched in September 2001. Changes at the concessions and seating stands were undertaken on the east side of The Hans Field. Future plans of the project include installation of campus classrooms, offices for coaches, press box, west side seating and a video display scoreboard.
