Volkswagen Chattanooga Automotive Receives World's First LEED Platinum Manufacturing Plant Recognition

SSOE Group, a global engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) firm, in association with Vertegy, declared their successful involvement in the world’s first and only LEED Platinum automotive manufacturing plant.

Volkswagen's Chattanooga manufacturing plant was recently presented with a LEED Platinum certification, the highest designation from the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC).

Out of the 69 points, the Volkswagen manufacturing plant obtained 52 points and earned the LEED Platinum title. Some of the sustainable features of the plant include the installation of white, reflective roofing material on 100% of the roof area of the building, which reflects heat thus conserving energy and minimizing cooling costs; VW's sustainably designed paint shop, which will conserve over 50M Gal of water per year; recycling of over 4,602 t of construction waste; promoting eco-friendly commutes, with bike racks for visitors and employees with advanced parking facilities; almost 48 % of total building materials were manufactured using recycled materials; minimal lighting to avoid creating an impact on the environment; improved strategies to conserve over 1.7 M Gal of potable water per and inclusion of low-flow showers, lavatory and kitchen faucets to decrease potable water usage furthermore, resulting in total conservation of over 3 M Gal of potable water every year.

Besides working on the Volkswagen Chattanooga manufacturing plant, SSOE designed the Ohio’s first Gold LEED certified facility and the U.S. first Gold LEED certified central utility plant. At present, SSOE is working on several projects all over the world. It was recognized by the ENR magazine, where it ranked first among green industrial and manufacturing design firms of the nation.
