Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA, announces that it will invest more than Ps. 350 million in the first phase of a new passenger terminal for the Acapulco International Airport. The investment is included in the Master Development Plan for the airport, and will help promote Acapulco as a tourist destination.
The new modern building will be designed to serve up to one million passengers per year, with the ability to expand capacity to two million in the medium term.
The terminal building's vanguard design will incorporate sustainable building concepts and characteristics, and harmonize with Acapulco's natural environment, combining concrete, glass, and large interior and exterior gardens.
The architecture and configuration will allow for efficient operations and low energy consumption, as one of its principal characteristics.
The new terminal will include complete flow separation of arriving and departing passengers, on both domestic and international flights, and will include latest generation systems and technologies.
Construction will adhere to high standards of efficiency and quality, offering ample, comfortable spaces for domestic and international airlines, passengers, authorities, and service providers. The commercial and passenger services areas will be complemented with modern signage and information systems.
The existing terminal building will be demolished. The initial phase of work will include logistical work and partial closure of the airport, without affecting service or airport operations. This phase is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014 and be completed in the first months of 2015.
The new building will be adjacent to the existing structure, in order to take advantage of the excellent airside infrastructure – runway, platform, and taxiways. The building will meet the standards for construction in seismic areas.
OMA's CEO, Porfirio Gonzalez, noted, "The new terminal will be distinctive, and will play an important role in promoting the new image of Acapulco, both at home and abroad. OMA will also continue to coordinate our activities with those of federal and state government, the hotel industry, and service providers to promote Acapulco's connectivity with more routes and more flight frequencies."
TAX Arquitectura, led by Alberto Kalach, will undertake the design.
