Greenbuild 2014: BuildingGreen Honors SCS-Certified Products

SCS Global Services, a leading independent certification body for the green building sector, is pleased to pay tribute to three companies -- PROSOCO, Marvin Windows, and KI -- whose SCS-certified or evaluated products are among the top 10 companies honored for innovative products for 2015 by BuildingGreen.

In the 13th consecutive year of the award, BuildingGreen, publisher of Environmental Building News, highlighted "transformative products [that] eliminate toxic chemicals and fossil fuels, and improve building and site performance."

Two SCS-certified products recognized on BuildingGreen's Top 10 list are as follows:

  • Marvin Windows and Doors - Casement and Direct Glaze windows certified to the Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS) standard, confirming that they cuts energy consumption and provides improved indoor air quality and resilience. Marvin windows and doors are certified by SCS under the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) Chain of Custody standard.
  • PROSOCO - The Fluid-Applied Cat 5 Air Barrier System is a high-performance alternative to sheet goods, based on a high-performance "hybrid" polymer chemistry that uses no solvents or isocyanates, and further adapted to remove phthalate plasticizers. This system, along with concrete coating and building construction coating and sealant products, have been certified under the SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold standard, the industry's toughest indoor air quality certification.

Another company on the Top 10 list, KI, was recognized for chairs manufactured with AirCarbon Plastic, made from a petroleum-free polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) plastic derived from agriculturally sourced methane instead of petroleum, thereby sequestering this potent greenhouse gas. AirCarbon Plastic is a product of Newlight Technologies. KI plans to introduce the Air Carbon chair in its Strive and Grazie chair lines, both of which are certified by SCS under its Indoor Advantage™ Gold program as meeting exceptional Indoor Air Quality standards. In addition, SCS is preparing a comprehensive Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for KI's Air Carbon chairs based on life cycle assessment (LCA).

"We'd like to congratulate KI, PROSOCO, and Marvin Windows for being included in BuildingGreen's prestigious Top 10 product list," said Robert J. Hrubes, SCS Executive Vice President.

Stanley Mathuram, SCS Manager Director of Environmental Certification Services, added, "It is innovative companies like these that make the green building industry such a dynamic force in the marketplace and in the quest for a sustainable path forward."
