The students at The Madeira Beach Fundamental School in Madeira Beach, FL, have a new fishing dock built with low-maintenance AZEK Deck, designed to endure harsh marine environments.
Doug Speeler, president of Speeler Foundations of Clearwater, recommended AZEK Deck for the 1,600 square ft. dock, as well as for new boat slips at the Madeira City Marina. "These are two of the most heavily used marina facilities in Pinellas County," said Speeler. "I am confident that AZEK Deck will hold up much better than wood in these locations."
As the only school in Pinellas County located on the water, Madeira Beach Fundamental School's K-8 students rely on the dock as part of their robust marine science program. When it showed signs of deterioration, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) raised funds through their "Dollars for Docks" program to replace it.
"Many schools throughout the region send their students on field trips to our dock," said Kat Amann, PTSA president at the time the project was completed. "The little kids watch the fish through the fencing around the dock, while the middle school students collect samples for the marine programs and the after-school fishing club."
The PTSA chose AZEK Deck's Brownstone color for the project, supplied by Decks & Docks of St. Petersburg. "Doug and his team did an amazing job," said Amann. "Everyone loves the new dock and the AZEK product."
Speeler finished the entire project in less than three weeks, just in time for the school's annual fish fry event. "It would have taken weeks longer if we had used wood," he said.
In February, Speeler installed about 100 boat slips and lifts at The Madeira City Marina with AZEK Deck's Silver Oak color. He will complete the rest of that project in October 2015.
"AZEK Deck is the best on the market," said Speeler. "We use tons of it for its longevity, ease of installation, low maintenance and no splinters, all very important to the looks and safety of a public project like a large marina." He added that he likes the variety of color choices he can offer clients, along with the beautiful end results.
