Recycling Opportunities For The Construction Industry

A new report by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) has identified areas that can be exploited to increase the recycling of plastic products. Along with the packaging and local authority sectors, the construction industry offers the best long-term prospects for recycled plastic opportunities. Suitable recycled plastic products include piping, industrial strapping and kerbside collection bins and boxes. These products alone could use 14500 tonnes per annum of recycled plastic over the next 2-5 years.

The most promising raw materials are PET and HDPE, both commonly found as plastic bottles. Recycling rates for both polymers is currently low and a large percentage of the recyclate used in the UK is sourced from overseas.
