Construction Site Safety Encouraged

In time for the start of European Health & Safety Week, Harry Thorburn, Managing Director of the Scottish arm of Bovis Lend Lease has written to the Scotland on Sunday newspaper to attempt to foster a culture of safety on construction sites.

He points out that construction companies constantly commit to reducing injuries and death on construction sites but this still means that there will be a significant number of construction related incidents. Bovis Lend Lease has taken a different approach and introduced an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) program in an effort to completely eliminate accidents. The exercise involves all people on a site to eliminate unsafe conditions and behaviour by employees, management and sub-contractors alike.

Thorburn says that an injury free workplace needs to take precedent over all other factors including schedules, production and costs. He is also pushing to have IIF accepted as an industry standard.
