ExxonMobil Introduces New Thermoplastic Elastomer for Consumer Goods Market

ExxonMobil Chemical has introduced new transparent and translucent thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) grades designed for grip applications in the kitchenware, consumer electronics, tools, small appliance and stationery markets. ExxonMobil TPE F471-60 exhibits excellent transparency with 82 percent light transmittance. The translucent grade, ExxonMobil TPE F371-60, has a light transmittance of 10 percent.

Both new grades offer a unique combination of properties that make them dishwasher safe and ideal replacements for flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These TPEs also accept a range of special effects such as metallic, iridescent or transparent colors.

“The consumer product market is very dynamic with OEMs and industrial designers always looking for something new and inspiring, the next trend. These transparent and translucent TPE grades provide exciting design opportunities enabling brand differentiation in rapidly evolving markets,” said Lynell Maenza, industry segment manager, ExxonMobil Chemical TPEs.

The high-flow grades, with a hardness of 60 Shore A, provide a soft and dry rubbery touch. They are odor-free and exhibit good chemical resistance.

Adhering well to polypropylene, the new grades can be processed using two-shot injection molding or overmolding techniques. This eliminates the need for adhesives, bonding agents and physical or mechanical interlocks. This reduces processing steps which can improve product development cycle times and lower system costs.

“These new grades, which complement our existing portfolio of grades for grip, aesthetic and comfort applications, have been developed using our 25 years’ experience and knowledge of these markets. We are excited about the design potential they will bring to the consumer product market,” said Maenza.
