The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), a leading manufacturer of insulation and weatherization solutions to the construction industry, today announced its support of President Obama’s $6 billion HOMESTAR Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program, designed to provide homeowners with incentives for making energy efficient investments in their homes. Dow applauds the President’s efforts to raise our nation’s awareness and focus on energy efficiency, and urges homeowners to take action to protect their single largest investment.
“We believe the HOMESTAR program will deliver both economic and environmental benefits,” says Andrew N. Liveris, Dow Chairman and CEO. “Economically, it will stimulate the construction sector, among the hardest hit in the recession, while also giving relief to homeowners, who count energy as their largest cost after their mortgage. HOMESTAR has the additional benefit of offering immediate consumer relief through direct rebates rather than tax credits to be accrued in a distant future.”
Almost 50 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) come from homes and work places, and the economic cost of heating and cooling our built environment is also staggering. According to U.S. Department of Energy estimates, residential and commercial buildings consume 41 QBTUs of total energy at a cost of $415 billion to our nation’s economy.
Today, insulation improvements are one of the most cost-effective ways to achieve long-term energy efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By taking advantage of the HOMESTAR program homeowners will reduce their monthly energy bills and increase the value of their homes, while helping to stimulate jobs at a time when the nation needs it the most.
