The CTU is acknowledged internationally as a centre of excellence. It is guided by an Advisory Committee of leading practitioners and its stated mission is “to carry out research and development work to the highest level and disseminate the information widely”.
The Unit is also very active in postgraduate training, continuing professional development and consultancy work- all producing a valuable partnership with industry.
The CTU has an inter-disciplinary team of engineers, chemists, geologists, physicists and material scientists and consists of 3 professors (including Visiting Industrial Professor P C Hewlett, Director, British Board of Agrément and Professor T A Harrison, Quarry Products Association), 3 Senior Lecturers/ Lecturers, 1 CPD/Consultancy Manager, 8 Research/Teaching Fellows and 18 RAs/ postgraduate students.
Funding for research is widely based: research councils, government and industry. This combination provides a culture where industry and academia can move together to optimise concrete for cost effectiveness, whilst allowing flexibility for radical innovation and development.
