ESO’s Council Approves Construction of European Extremely Large Telescope

At a recent meeting ESO’s main governing body, the Council [1] gave the green light for the construction of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) in two phases. Spending of around one billion euros has been authorised for the first phase, which will cover the construction costs of a fully working telescope with a suite of powerful instruments and first light targeted in ten years time.

Airgas Announces Plans to Build Liquid Hydrogen Plant in Calvert City

Airgas, Inc., one of the nation’s leading suppliers of industrial, medical, and specialty gases, and related products, today announced plans to build a liquid hydrogen plant in Calvert City, KY. The new facility is targeted to be on-stream in the summer of 2016 with the capacity to produce ten tons per day of liquid hydrogen for use in a wide range of customer applications, including electrical power generation; the production of metals, glass, chemicals, and food products; and emerging applications for hydrogen-powered fuel cells.

ICA Fluor JV with Empresas ICA Signs Contract to Build $1.3 Billion Delayed Coker Unit

Fluor Corporation announced that its ICA Fluor industrial engineering-construction joint venture with Empresas ICA, S.A.B. de C.V. signed a contract with Pemex Refinación for the construction of the delayed coker unit that will be installed at the Miguel Hidalgo Refinery in Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico. The total contract value is $1.3 billion, and Fluor will book its $650 million share of the contract in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Good Planning Can Help Promote Reuse of Construction and Demolition Waste

With good planning, it is possible to promote the reuse of construction and demolition waste and thereby both conserve the environment and save on material costs. In the future, it will be even more important to assess how buildings can reasonably be repaired or demolished into parts, together with how the remaining service life of the parts can be utilized in new applications. The best method is to implement demolition planning already as a component of construction design.

Hanwha SolarOne to Invest $12 Million to Build 230MW PV Module Factory in South Korea

Hanwha SolarOne, a top-10 global photovoltaic manufacturer of high-quality, cost-competitive solar modules, will build a new solar photovoltaic (PV) module factory in Eumseong, Chungbuk, South Korea. Hanwha SolarOne will invest $12 million to build the facility, which is scheduled to begin production in the second quarter of 2015 with an annual manufacturing capacity of 230 megawatts (MW).

Tile Coating Manufacturer, Vetriceramici Acquired by Ferro for €83 Million

Ferro Corporation (“Company”) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of tile coating manufacturer Vetriceramici S.p.A. for €83 million (approximately $104 million), subject to customary working capital and other purchase price adjustments. Vetriceramici was owned by Milan, Italy-based Private Equity Funds’ Management Company Star Capital SGR S.p.A. and other related minority owners. The acquisition was previously announced on September 21, 2014.
