Redwood Systems to Install Intelligent Lighting System at SAP Labs’ Buildings in California

Redwood Systems, a pioneer of unified power, control and sensing systems for intelligent lighting, today announced that SAP, the world’s leading provider of business software and a sustainability pioneer, has selected Redwood’s products to maximize the performance and functionality of SAP Labs U.S.’s LED installation.

By installing Redwood Engines to control and power the LED lighting installed in SAP Labs’ buildings in Palo Alto, Calif., Redwood Systems will enable SAP to save energy and reduce operational costs. SAP will display the installation at the SAP® Energy Efficiency Showcase being held today at the SAP Labs U.S., Palo Alto campus.

“Becoming a sustainable enterprise involves connecting a network of innovative, sustainable initiatives, and our campus in Palo Alto serves as a great test center for initiatives that we will consider introducing in other SAP locations,” said Peter Graf, chief sustainability officer, SAP. “Redwood Systems is essential to this overall effort in helping us execute on our energy-efficiency efforts, while contributing to a state-of-the-art work environment at SAP Palo Alto. Between our investment in LEDs and light controls, we expect to achieve approximately $80,000 in annual operational savings, save 70 tons in carbon footprint each year, and see a return on our investment in 5 years.”

SAP’s strong commitment to sustainability drives their plans to adopt 337 LED fixtures in Palo Alto for combined gains in performance, quality, longevity and efficiency. Redwood Systems’ innovative technology will enable SAP to maximize its investment in LED lighting by leveraging the unique, digital properties of this next-generation lighting technology. The result for SAP is a simplified solution to lighting management – consisting of scheduling, daylight harvesting, individual task tuning, and motion and occupancy sensing – aligned with the company’s energy-conservation and cost-mitigation goals.

“Our unified power, control and sensor system has the potential to make a significant impact on our customers’ energy usage and operating costs – especially in an organization of SAP’s size,” said Dave Leonard, CEO and co-founder of Redwood Systems. “We’re very excited that SAP, which has exhibited a strong commitment to sustainability, has chosen Redwood Systems to gain critical insight into its daily operations and enable innovative energy-efficiency applications.”

LED Light Fixtures—Coupled with Building Controls—Achieve Significant Energy Savings

While LED luminaires can substantially reduce the typical lighting energy profile, there is an increasing understanding that even greater gains can be achieved by coupling LEDs with intelligent dimming, scheduling, occupancy and daylighting controls. Redwood’s first-of-its kind technology addresses this by combining power and control over the same low-voltage network. This allows for much greater accuracy and responsiveness, and further reduces the energy load while providing greater insight into the way the building is operating in real time.

The SAP Energy Efficiency Showcase will bring together a select group of leading organizations, including Redwood Systems, to share experiences and expertise in executing a business case for sustainability.
