Rikers Island Installs EverLast Induction Fixtures to Sustain Prison Operations

Rikers Island, one of the largest penitentiaries in the U.S., houses nearly 14,000 inmates, 7,000 guards on the 400-acre island, uses a substantial amount of energy to sustain its prison operations.

The NYC Department of Corrections recently opted to implement an energy efficient lighting initiative in an effort to cut costs and enhance efficiency at their larger facilities.

The Department of Corrections replaced a variety of metal halide and high pressure sodium lights with nearly 1,000 EverLast® induction fixtures. "We were very pleased in how we were able to be responsive to the Department of Corrections urgent need to secure the appropriate funding and work cooperatively with EverLast®," commented Adam Wapniak, Energy Project Coordinator of NYC Department of Corrections.

Riker's Island officials began research for a lighting solution earlier this summer and connected with Atlantech Alliance of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to find an efficient option that matched their lighting specifications. With the assistance of Atlantech Alliance, the EverLast® fixtures were recommended based on their warranty and reduced energy usage compared to other brands on the market revealed through the specification process.

"We participated in the design and specification of high bay, street, and wall pack fixtures. The specification resulted in performance requirements which met the lighting needs of the prison," commented Ryan Miller, representative of Atlantech Alliance. "Solicitation went through normal state procurement process. During the bidders response; multiple bidders responded with 'or equal' substitutions. The compliance and verification process found that competing fixtures were submitted as equal but rejected when tested upon compliance of the specification represented by thirty to forty percent loss characteristics."

"We are very appreciative of EverLast®'s support in the specification process and ensuring that we met our design criteria. It was refreshing to work with a vendor who took the time to truly understand our needs and ensure that we received what was necessary. The installation met our timelines and was completed successfully," stated Mahdi Jawad, NYC Department of Corrections.

The EverLast® Wall Pack, High Bay, and Cobra Head fixtures provide color rendition, and light quality superior to traditional metal halide and HPS fixtures. EverLast® induction lighting fixtures are also available with a SMART dimmable option, providing even more energy savings while areas are vacant. Furthermore, induction lighting uses 60 percent less energy and has an unmatched 100,000 hour lamp life.
