USGBC Awards LEED Silver Green Building Certification to ComEd’s Two Facilities

ComEd today announced that it has been awarded LEED Silver green building certification for two facilities: the recently refurbished space at Lincoln Centre Two in Oakbrook Terrace and the company's newly built training center in Rockford.

The LEED or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for design, construction and operation of green buildings.

"ComEd is extremely proud to receive this environmental recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council. This is the first time a ComEd facility has earned LEED certification," said Anne Pramaggiore, ComEd president and CEO. "Increasing the sustainability of our buildings is another way ComEd demonstrates its commitment to the environment."

"ComEd's projects efficiently use natural resources and make an immediate, positive impact on the environment, which will benefit future generations to come," said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair, USGBC.

In December 2012, ComEd completed a total renovation of floors two through six of its Lincoln Centre Two facility in Oakbrook Terrace which included the construction of a newly consolidated customer call center. The project installed more efficient water fixtures as well as lighting fixtures and installed ENERGY STAR® qualified equipment and appliances. ComEd also optimized the use of daylight to reduce the amount of energy expended on lighting.

The USGBC awarded LEED certification to the Lincoln Centre Two facility for its 100 percent purchase of green power, 100 percent use of ENERGY STAR® compliant power, 94 percent rate of recycling construction waste, 73 percent use of regional materials, 40 percent reduction in lighting power density, and other environmental practices.

In January, ComEd built its first training facility for employees, in accordance with Smart Grid legislation. The Rockford Training Center is comprised of 34,000 square feet of classroom and indoor training space, 85,000 square feet of outdoor training yards, a 100-seat auditorium and a customer education area.

According to the USGBC, the training facility was awarded LEED certification for its 100 percent maximization of open space, 81 percent management of construction waste, 98 percent use of certified wood, 40 percent reduction in water use, and other sustainability efforts.
