CPBS Develops Cost-Effective Exterior Stucco System

Composite Panel Building Systems (CPBS) has developed a cost-effective exterior stucco system that delivers an energy efficient building envelope for new construction, renovations or retrofitted buildings.

The new C-SIS Stucco System consists of Composite Structural Insulated Sheathing (C-SIS), integrated joint sealing accessories and Stuc-O-Flex’s elastomeric acrylic stucco.

The eco-friendly C-SIS offers 5-in-1 components with no layers as an alternative to conventional oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood sheathing for traditionally framed wood or metal structures. C-SIS sheathing is made with 100% composite materials and manufactured without adhesives; the fiberglass reinforced thermoset (FRT) skin is bonded by a chemical reaction to rigid, closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation during manufacturing so the risk of delamination is eliminated. The 1-1/8” sheathing provides a nominal insulating value of R-6, which when added to a traditionally framed 2 x 4 wall with R-15 batt insulation, achieves an R-21 wall without the added expense of 2 x 6 framing. The 2-1/8” C-SIS sheathing provides an insulating value of R-12 so when coupled with conventional 2 x 4 framing and R-15 batt insulation it is easy to achieve an R-27 wall. C-SIS sheathing may be applied with a standard drywall screw gun to either wood or metal studs.

For the integrated fastening and joint sealing accessories, CPBS teamed with major manufacturers including 3M and Screw Products. These innovative components measurably increase air and water barrier capabilities of the entire C-SIS Stucco System delivering long-term performance.

“The energy performance of C-SIS sheathing yields low energy bills and meets 2012 energy codes,” said a spokesperson for CPBS. “The C-SIS Stucco System dramatically outperforms built up, piecemeal combinations of OSB, caulk and tape, air and water barriers and vapor retarders in lowering operating costs. No other building system delivers as many benefits, with superior insulation, vapor retarder, an air and water tight building envelope, enhanced structural performance and water shedding drainage plane.”

Many house wraps and water resistive barriers suffer damage during installation or fail to prevent water intrusion before finish materials are applied. C-SIS Sheathing is engineered to withstand the rigors of the construction process without losing performance value. “The C-SIS Stucco System addresses all the weaknesses of multi-layered, labor intensive and low performance exterior wall building materials and methods,” the CPBS spokesperson added.

“Traditional stucco is an expensive seven step, labor intensive process and EIFS synthetic stucco requires professional installation to prevent application issues, and later hazardous mold and moisture problems. CPBS approves using only Stuc-O-Flex International to finish exterior buildings with an easy, rapid application and labor saving stucco exterior finish,” said the CPBS spokesperson.

Stuc-O-Flex is a highly resilient 100% Acrylic Polymer compound that looks and feels like traditional stucco. Its thermo-plastic and elastomeric nature allows building movement while enhancing resistance against cracks. In combination with the C-SIS sheathing, Stuc-O-Flex creates a continuous, even surface ideal for a long-lasting bond with the Stuc-O-Flex elastomeric acrylic stucco in only three steps: Stuc-O-Flex’s joint compound, wall surface primer then elastomeric acrylic stucco finish.

Additionally, CPBS offers property owners, who want to upgrade an existing building’s energy efficiency and long-term performance, the Exterior Energy Retrofit which consists of new R-15 batt insulation in wall cavity, the C-SIS Sheathing System, new, high performance composite framed windows and doors, an optimized HVAC system design and exterior finish with stucco or siding. The spokesperson said, “Only by combining all of these elements can you create the tight building envelope that delivers the significant energy savings homeowners’ desire.” CPBS’s retrofit offers a more comprehensive system that delivers long-term sustainability and an enduring return on investment unlike any other exterior retrofit.

“This system is the most effective way to tightly seal the building envelope and reduce monthly operating for residential and commercial new construction, renovations or retrofitted buildings,” said CPBS spokesperson. “The multi-tasking C-SIS Stucco System offers unparalleled energy savings, enhanced R-values, environmental efficiency and long-term sustainability.”
