PCL Earns DBIA "National Award of Merit" for Green Build Terminal Expansion at San Diego International Airport

PCL Construction is pleased to announce that one of its design-build projects, The Green Build Terminal Expansion at the San Diego International Airport, will receive the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) "National Award of Merit" in the Aviation category at the 2014 Design-Build Conference and Expo being held in Dallas, Texas on October 6-8, 2014.

The awards program recognizes exemplary collaboration and integration in design-build project delivery, and honors the Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture's outstanding achievement in building one of the region's recent landmark projects.

As the first design-build and largest project in the history of the San Diego International Airport, The Green Build is essential in supporting a nearly 100% anticipated increase in airport traffic over the next 20 years. The $480 million Terminal 2 project includes a three-story, 460,000 sq. ft. expansion of the terminal with ten new gates, twice as many security lanes, expanded concessions, and 1,500,000 sq. ft. of new taxiway and jet parking. The Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture's approach to the project saved the owner 10% in overall costs from the original estimate due to value engineering and fast tracking of the schedule, which allowed construction to begin while the terminal was still under design. Originally targeted for LEED Silver certification, the airport expansion received the prestigious LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), making it the only commercial airport to receive this rating in the country.

Dale Kain, Vice President and District Manager for PCL, says, "We'd like to thank the DBIA for the Aviation, National Award of Merit. We are very pleased to have this significant project and our design-build team recognized nationally by the DBIA. PCL is honored to be counted among DBIA's award winners."
