Pacific Western Wood Products Now Selling BamPly, Bamboo Plywood

BamPly(R) is now a registered trademark of Pacific Western Wood, Inc. BamPly(R) bamboo panels are imported directly from mills in China by PWW. Bamboo plywood is made from a sustainable resource and qualifies for a number of LEED(R)(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credits. Bamboo is actually a grass, and is easily manufactured into lumber or plywood. It's a rapidly renewable resource and regrows much faster than hardwood trees. Some bamboo species grow 3 feet in one day, but five to six-year-old Moso bamboo plants are considered mature and best for making high-quality bamboo plywood.

Bamboo is now used in thousands of products from clothing to cutting boards but this "green" material is becoming a favorite of architects and interior designers. Because it is manufactured with a non-formaldehyde glue and is rapidly renewable, Bamboo plywood qualifies for LEED credits MR 6 (Rapid Renewable Materials) and EQ 4 (Low or No Added Urea Formaldehyde). From kitchen cabinetry to furniture to wall panels, bamboo plywood is environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

Bamboo plywood comes in several forms depending on the manufacturing process. Vertical grain bamboo plywood is made from solid bamboo strips laid on edge and laminated together producing a narrow grain look. Horizontal grain bamboo plywood is manufactured with the wider faces laminated together to form the surface. This method of production shows the "knuckles" characteristic in a bamboo stalk.

BamPly(R) comes in vertical and horizontal grain with either a natural or carbonized color. Natural bamboo plywood -- just as the name indicates -- is very light and carries its natural color. Carbonized bamboo gets its color from a steam pressure treatment that actually caramelizes the natural sugars, resulting in a honey-wheat or amber color.

Bamboo plywood is made from the specie Pyllostachys Pubescens (common name: Moso) and harvested at five to six-years-old for maximum stability and hardness. Adhesives used in laminating Bamboo plywood are more than three times lower in formaldehyde than the rigid California Air Resources Board standards require.
