Emergency Fume and Smoke Ventilators

From April 2005, CE marking of emergency fume and smoke ventilators will be a requirement for the free movement of these products within the EU and for placing them on the market of many EU countries.

The CE mark declares that the product bearing it complies with all applicable EU regulations. For emergency smoke ventilators, compliance requires type testing of representative examples from a manufacturer''''s range and an audited Factory Production Control (FPC) system, to ensure that the manufactured quality is consistent.

Whilst not a requirement for construction products in the UK, the presence of CE marking reassures specifiers that a manufacturer is complying with the regulations, and that their product will perform in an emergency as required.

The CE mark may only be affixed after successful completion of testing, auditing of factory production control and the issue of a certificate by accredited independent authority.

BSRIA has been working in partnership with BSI to ensure that UK and other European manufacturers can comply with the regulations.

BSRIA is the only body notified by the UK government to carry out type tests of these safety critical products to EN12101-3 in its high temperature test facility (up to 400°C). The EN12101-3 will replace all National Standards used in the EU - including the British Standard BS7346 Part 2:1990.

Our independent services ensure that you can obtain the vital and verifiable evidence to demonstrate that equipment is fit for use. A number of UK and European manufacturers are using the facility for development work, allowing them to improve their designs prior to full certification.

The test results are passed to BSI, who carry out an audit of the FPC and then issue the Certificate of Conformity, authorising manufacturers to apply a CE mark to their products.

We are in discussion with a number of high profile European manufacturers and are currently undertaking test work for Elta Fans, Matthews & Yates, NuAire, The London Fan Company and also Fläkt Woods who as a result become the first fan manufacturer in the world to apply CE marking to these safety critical products.
