US-based Roanoke Cement Company, a subsidiary of Titan America has been recognised for practising environmental outreach and terminal safety at its plant in Troutville, Virginia and terminal in Castle Hayne, North Carolina.
The Troutville plant of the company was chosen as the winner of the “Outreach” Award for 2012 Cement Industry Energy and Environmental Awards. Industry trade magazine Cement Americas and Portland Cement Association are sponsoring the award. This award is presented to particular cement facilities that take an effort to improve its environmental conditions and at the same time improve government relations and bring enhancement to employees and the general community. Specific achievements of the Troutville facility include 2011 Virginia Statewide Mineral Mining Reclamation Award and the fifth Energy Star award. Other activities that were conducted by the facility were American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Second Annual Fishing Day and on-site migration and expansion.
The Castle Hayne terminal of the company was recognised for its exemplary safety record. The terminal has not experience a lost time accident for the past 15 years and for this purpose it has already been recognised by Cherie Berry who is the Commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Labour. The terminal has also been recognised for its on-going effective workplace health and safety management systems. WECT-TV has also presented a three part report on the environmental outreach and safety programs being carried out at the Troutville facility.
